What is AS 1074 (NZS 1074)?

AS 1074 (NZS 1074) is an Australian (New Zealand) general-purpose steel pipe and fittings.

It applies to threaded steel pipes and fittings specified in AS 1722.1, and flat-ended steel pipes from DN 8 to DN 150.

Three wall thicknesses of steel pipe are also specified, light, medium, and heavy.

Manufacturing Processes

AS 1074 tubes can be manufactured by either seamless or welded processes, with the welding process generally being ERW.

Three types of pipe ends are included: plain, screwed, and socketed.

AS 1074 (NZS 1074) Chemical Composition

Standard P S CE
AS 1074 (NZS 1074) 0.045% max 0.045% max 0.4 max

CE is shorthand for carbon equivalent, which needs to be obtained by calculation.

CE = C + Mn/6

AS 1074 (NZS 1074) Mechanical Properties

Minimum yield strength: 195 MPa;

Minimum tensile strength: 320 - 460 MPa;

Elongation: not less than 20%.

Hydrostatic Test or Non-Destructive Test

Each steel pipe should be tested by selecting one of the steel pipe tightness test methods.

Hydrostatic Test

The steel pipe maintains a water pressure value of 5 MPa for a sufficiently long period of time without leakage.

Non-Destructive Test

Eddy's current test is in accordance with AS 1074 Appendix B.

Ultrasonic testing in accordance with AS 1074 Appendix C.

AS 1074 Steel Pipe Weight Chart and Outside Diameter Deviation

Wall thickness grades: light, medium, and heavy.

The wall thickness grades of steel pipe vary and so do the corresponding outside diameter tolerances. Below is a table of the weights of these three grades of steel pipe and the corresponding OD tolerances.
