ASTM A252 Grade 3 Overview

ASTM A252 steel pipe is a common cylindrical pipe pile material covering both welded and seamless types for steel pipe piles where a steel cylinder is used as a permanent load-carrying member or as a shell to form a cast-in-place concrete pile.

Grade 3 is the highest performance grade among the three grades of A252, with a minimum yield strength of 310MPa [45,000 psi] and a minimum tensile strength of 455MPa [66,000 psi]. Compared to other grades, Grade 3 is more suitable for structures subject to heavy loads or in more demanding environments, and is often used in the construction of foundations for large bridges, high-rise buildings, or offshore platforms.

ASTM A252 Grade Classification

A252 is divided into three grades to cope with different usage environments.

Grade 1Grade 2, and Grade 3.

Gradual increase in mechanical properties.

Grade 1 is mainly used in applications where the soil quality is good and the load-bearing requirements are not particularly high. Examples include lightweight structural foundations for residential or commercial buildings, or small bridges that do not require significant loads.

Grade 2 is suitable for applications with poor soil conditions or high load-bearing requirements. For example, moderately loaded bridges, large commercial buildings, or the infrastructure of public facilities. It can also be used in areas with high water tables, such as rivers and lakes, where strong deformation resistance is required.

Grade 3 is used for heavy-duty requirements in extreme conditions, such as large bridges, heavy equipment foundations, or deep foundation work for high-rise buildings. In addition, for special geological conditions, such as very soft or unstable soils, Grade 3 offers the highest load-carrying capacity and stability.

Manufacturing Processes

ASTM A252 Pipe Pile Pipes can be categorized into two main manufacturing processes: seamless and welded.

In the welding process, it can be further subdivided into ERW, EFW, and SAW.

SAW can be categorized into LSAW (SAWL) and SSAW (HSAW) depending on the direction of the weld.

Because SAW are usually welded using a double-sided submerged arc welding technique, they are also often referred to as DSAW.

 These various manufacturing methods allow ASTM A252 tubular pile pipe to meet a wide variety of engineering needs.

SSAW Manufacturing Process

SSAW steel pipe is ideal for the manufacture of large-diameter steel pipe and can be produced in diameters of up to 3,500mm. Not only can it be manufactured in very long lengths, ideal for large structures, but SSAW steel pipe is also cheaper compared to LSAW and SMLS steel pipe.

Chemical Components of ASTM A252 Grade 3

Phosphorus content not to exceed 0.050%.

The chemical composition requirements for ASTM A252 are relatively simple compared to other pipe standards for other applications because when the pipe is used as a pipe pile, it is primarily structural in nature. It is sufficient that the steel pipe can withstand the required loads and environmental conditions. This simplified chemistry helps to optimize cost and productivity while meeting the basic needs of structural safety and durability.

Where the specified nominal wall thickness is intermediate to those shown above, the minimum elongation value shall be determined as follows:

Grade 3: E = 32t + 10.00 [E = 1.25t + 10.00]

E: elongation in 2 in. [50.8 mm], %;

t: specified nominal wall thickness, in. [mm].
