Traditional alloys play a standard role in the production of metals, whether it be stainless steel used in medical devices or seafood, any of the generations of high-performance steels developed over the past few decades for the automotive industry, or metals such as aluminum and titanium. which have a high strength to weight ratio and high corrosion resistance make it particularly suitable for applications in the aerospace, oil refining and chemical industries.
The same applies to some carbon steel alloys, especially alloys with certain carbon and manganese content. Depending on the amount of alloying elements, some of them are well suited for the manufacture of flanges, fittings and pipelines in chemical and oil refineries.They all have one thing in common: the materials used in these applications must be ductile enough to withstand brittle fracture and stress corrosion cracking (SCC)。
Standards organizations such as the American Society of Manufacturing Engineers (ASME) and ASTM Intl. (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) provides guidance in this regard. Two related industry codes - ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPVD) Section VIII, Section 1, and ASME B31.3, Process Piping - address carbon steel (anything containing 0.29% to 0.54% carbon and 0.60% to 1.65% manganese, iron containing materials). flexible enough for use in hot climates, temperate regions and temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit. However, recent setbacks at ambient temperature have led to a closer examination of the amounts and proportions of the various microalloying elements used in the manufacture of such flanges, fittings and api steel pipes.
Until recently, neither ASME nor ASTM required impact testing to confirm the ductility of many carbon steel products used at temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit. The decision to exclude certain products is based on the historical properties of the material. For example, when the minimum metal design temperature (MDMT) is -20 degrees Fahrenheit, it is exempt from impact testing due to its traditional role in such applications.
