Provenance of Common Carbon Steel Pipe Weight Tables
The main standards for carbon steel pipe dimensional weight are ISO 4200, EN 10220, ASME B36.10M, and ASTM A53/A53M.
Although the API 5L standard does not provide a specific table of pipe weights, the notes to Table 9 indicate that the standardized values for the specified outside diameter and wall thickness of steel pipe are referenced to ISO 4200 and ASME B36.10M.
Comparing Carbon Steel Pipe Weight Standards
Different standards may provide specific weight tables for different applications and material types.
Pipe Weight Calculation Method
The Steel Pipe Weight Calculation Method provides an easy method of calculating the weight of steel pipe, making it possible to quickly determine the total weight of the material required, thus reducing unnecessary expenditure. With this method, the weight of a steel pipe can be estimated based on its diameter, wall thickness, and length, which is extremely important for planning transportation, designing support structures, and estimating costs. Accurate weight calculations also help to ensure structural safety and prevent structural failure due to overloading.
The weight formula for carbon steel pipe is essentially the same in the different standards, with only slight differences in abbreviations.
M=(D-T)×T×C
M is the mass per unit length;
D is the specified outside diameter, expressed in millimeters (inches);
T is the specified wall thickness, expressed in millimeters (inches);
C is 0.0246615 for calculations in SI units and 10.69 for calculations in USC units.
NOTE: API 5L has a value of 0.02466 in calculations in SI units.
0.0246615 and 0.02466 do represent a small difference in the values taken in weight calculations. This difference, while small, may have an impact when performing very precise calculations. Typically, this difference will have little effect for most engineering and construction applications, but where high accuracy is required, the appropriate accuracy value should be selected for the specific need.
Meaning of Steel Pipe Schedule
It is a standardized numerical system used to express the wall thickness of steel tubes, providing a uniform reference for the thickness of tubes to suit different pressure and temperature conditions.
Specifically, the higher the "Schedule" number, the thicker the wall thickness of the tube, and accordingly, the greater the internal pressure the tube can withstand. For example, Schedule 40 is a medium wall thickness configuration widely used in low to medium-pressure applications, while Schedule 80 has a thicker wall thickness for higher-pressure environments.
This classification was originally developed to simplify the process of designing and manufacturing industrial piping by standardizing wall thickness grades, making it easier for engineers to select the right piping for their work environment. The various Schedule grades were developed taking into account a variety of factors, including the mechanical properties of the materials used, the pressures and temperatures under operating conditions, and the nature of the fluid.
Carbon Steel Pipe Schedule Data Source
In the Pipe Schedule ASME B36.10 and ASTM A53 Table 2.2 (Plain End) that is, the value is the same.
However, due to the difference in the processing of the pipe end ASTM A53 Table 2.3 (Threaded and Coupled) values will be different.
ASTM A53 Table 2.3 (Threaded and Coupled) Schedule 30, 40, 60, and 80 only. In the query of the Pipe Schedule, pay attention to the Distinction.
Schedule Classification
schedule 5, schedule 10, schedule 20, schedule 30, schedule 40, schedule 60, schedule 80, schedule 100, schedule 120, schedule 140, schedule 160.
Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 are the most common pipe wall thickness grades for low to medium-pressure and higher-pressure environments, respectively.
