Suitable for tubular heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer equipment.
Navigation Buttons
Diameter Range
ASTM A179 for tubes with outside diameters between 3.2 -76.2 mm [NPS 1/8 - 3 in.].
Heat Treatment
Heat treated at 1200℉ [650℃] or above after final cold suction passage.
Appearance
The finished steel pipe shall not have scale. Slight oxidation is not considered a scale.
Dimensional Tolerances
Dimensional Tolerances
List | Sort | Scope |
Mass | DN≤38.1mm[NPS 11/2] | +12% |
DN>38.1mm[NPS 11/2] | +13%
Diameter | DN≤38.1mm[NPS 11/2] | +20% |
DN>38.1mm[NPS 11/2] | +22%
Lengths | DN<50.8mm[NPS 2] | +5mm[NPS 3/16] |
DN≥50.8mm[NPS 2] | +3mm[NPS 1/8]
Straightness and Finish | Finished tubes shall be reasonably straight and have smooth ends free of burrs.
Defect handling | Any discontinuity or irregularity found in the tube may be removed by grinding, provided that a smooth curved surface is maintained, and the wall thickness is not decreased to less than that permitted by this or the product specification. |
ASTM A179 weight formula is:
M=(D-T)×T×C
M is the mass per unit length;
D is the specified outside diameter, expressed in millimeters (inches);
T is the specified wall thickness, expressed in millimeters (inches);
C is 0.0246615 for calculations in SI units and 10.69 for calculations in USC units.

Flattening Test
Test method: ASTM A450 Part 19.
Flaring Test
Test method: ASTM A450 Part 21.
Expanded Trivia: The flaring test is a test used to evaluate the plastic deformability and crack resistance of metallic materials, especially tubes when subjected to flaring processes. This test is commonly used to evaluate the quality and suitability of tubes, especially in applications where welding, flaring or other forms of processing are required.
Flange Test
Test Method: ASTM A450 Part 22. Alternative to Flare Test.
Expanded Trivia: Typically refers to an experiment used to evaluate the plastic deformability and crack resistance of sheet metal, pipe, or other materials during simulated flanged joints.
Hardness Test
Test Method: ASTM A450 Part 23. Hardness shall not exceed 72 HRBW.
HRBW: Specifically refers to Rockwell B Scale hardness tests performed on welded areas.
Hydraulic Pressure Test
Test method: ASTM A450 Part 24.
Non-destructive Electrical Test
Test method: ASTM A450, Part 26. Alternative to the hydraulic test.
ASTM A179 Marking
ASTM A179 shall be clearly marked with the manufacturer's name or brand name, specification number, grade, and purchaser's name and order number.
The marking need not include the year date of this specification.
For tubes less than 31.8 mm [1 1/4 in. ] in diameter and tubes under 1 m [3 ft] in length, the required information may be marked on a tag securely attached to the bundle or box in which the tubes are shipped.
